Don’t “think about it,” just do it! No one likes to think about an untimely death…but it’s life!! Recently, I spent 5 days at the hospital and had a few little scares at the beginning of my stay. During the first night’s stay, they struggled to get my blood pressure and oxygen levels up. As they were getting me situated and going through their routine, they inquired as to whether or not I had a will and advanced directive for medical care to which I replied yes…yes, I do! The nurses looked at me surprised and somewhat taken aback. I wasn’t sure if I was dying in front of their eyes, or if they were just surprised that I/we had a plan…luckily, it was the latter! If you become incapacitated and on life support, what would your wishes be? If you and your spouse die in a car wreck, who would you want to take care of your children? Who would you want to oversee the life insurance proceeds, investments, etc.? Would you want the courts to decide every matter if you were gone? We are not practicing attorneys, and I do not administer legal advice, however, after many years in this business and many years experiencing life myself… I encourage you to have a plan. Seek out a competent attorney to at least help you get a couple of basic documents in writing. Plan for the worst… it will likely never occur, but peace of mind is valuable to you and your loved ones! |
